SBU Creates Upward Income Mobility
A new study led by the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research ranks Stony
Brook among the top 10 colleges and universities in the nation whose students begin
college at the bottom fifth of income distribution and then go on to have income in
the top three-fifths of income distribution.
According to the study, “51% of students from the bottom quintile reach the top quintile at Stony Brook. Because 16% of students at Stony Brook are from the bottom quintile compared with 4% at the Ivy-Plus colleges, Stony Brook has a bottom-to-top-quintile mobility rate of 8.4%, substantially higher than the 2.2% rate on average at Ivy-Plus colleges.”

Improving the Financial Aid Experience
Students applying for financial aid no longer need to wait until January 1 to file
the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is now available earlier
(October 1 of the previous year) and families now enter income information from an
earlier tax year.
This national shift, known as "prior-prior year (PPY)," provides families more time to review finaicial aid offers from colleges, and weigh their options in order to make informed decisions.
To further expedite the issuing of aid, Stony Brook's Financial Aid Office has created a process to allow students to securely upload documents through their SOLAR accounts.
