SBU Creates Upward Income Mobility
A new study led by the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research ranks Stony Brook among the top 10 colleges and universities in the nation whose students begin college at the bottom fifth of income distribution and then go on to have income in the top three-fifths of income distribution.

According to the study, “51% of students from the bottom quintile reach the top quintile at Stony Brook. Because 16% of students at Stony Brook are from the bottom quintile compared with 4% at the Ivy-Plus colleges, Stony Brook has a bottom-to-top-quintile mobility rate of 8.4%, substantially higher than the 2.2% rate on average at Ivy-Plus colleges.”

Improving the Financial Aid Experience
Students applying for financial aid no longer need to wait until January 1 to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is now available earlier (October 1 of the previous year) and families now enter income information from an earlier tax year.

This national shift, known as "prior-prior year (PPY)," provides families more time to review finaicial aid offers from colleges, and weigh their options in order to make informed decisions.

To further expedite the issuing of aid, Stony Brook's Financial Aid Office has created a process to allow students to securely upload documents through their SOLAR accounts.

DegreeWorks Arrives

The Registrar's Office recently announced the release of Degree Works, a new web-based advising tool and degree audit program that provides up-to-date information about a student’s progress toward graduation. Students and advisors can see which major, minor, specialization and general education requirements have already been fulfilled and which ones still need to be completed. On June 30th, 2017, the PeopleSoft Degree Audit will be discontinued and the Degree Works Degree Audit will become the official audit on record. NEWS YOU CAN USE

Select one of the tabs below to read about recent accomplishments and ongoing projects.

  • Undergraduate Admissions

wang centerThe College Board introduced the redesigned SAT in May 2016, with several important changes from the prior exam. Instead of three sections, there are two: Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing. Each section is scored on a 200-to-800 scale. The previously-required essay is now optional.

High school seniors applying for Fall 2017 entry to Stony Brook have the option of submitting (a) SAT scores from sittings prior to the redesign, (b) the new SAT, (c) or the ACT. The Admissions Office will be studying College Board and institutional data to best determine  how predictive new scores are of student success at Stony Brook.

The Admissions Office met or exceeded all of their targets for 2016-17; with nearly 35,000 first-year applications, we enrolled a freshman class of 2,934. Last year, our recruiting staff attended 1,193 recruitment fairs and high school visits. On campus, we hosted 331 weekly information sessions and 128 special tours and information sessions for high school groups and community agencies.

  • Financial Aid and Scholarship Services

finaidThe "Money Smart Seawolves" program had a wildly successful fall campaign. Watch soon for our announcement of two winners, who will win the value of in-state tuition for participating in our workshops.

  • Health Sciences Office of Student Services

hscOur office continues to assess how we can leverage the most robust online application systems, and we've partnered with units across campus to conduct a holistic search of products and resources. Several products are being carefully reviewed, some of which also include an imaging component which would enable the Health Sciences Office of Student Services to become paperless.

This fall, we successfully implemented admissions, records and registration, and financial aid for two new programs in School of Health Technology and Management: a BS in Polysomnographic Technology (B.S.) and an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Disability Studies.

  • International Admissions

Our staff will be hosting two international counselor tours on our campus later in the spring. One group will consist of high school counselors from India, and the other of counselors from across the globe. Both groups will spend a day on campus exploring the Stony Brook experience.

  • Registrar

This fall, we completed a large scale scanning project of over 167,000 pages, creating an archival record and changing current procedures regarding the maintenance of our documents.

A new TAP Summary page is now available in PeopleSoft/SOLAR that allows students to see if their classes are TAP compliant much earlier than before and remedies compliance issues prior to the tuition liability deadline.

The new "Schedule Builder" was launched for Fall 2016, giving students a web-based interface where they can enter their major, SBC and DEC courses, and find courses that fit their needs. See it in action:

  • Enrollment Communications

    iphone

Stony Brook's Enrollment Communications staff are at the forefront of innovation.

Leveraging the latest tools of choice for students, we recently launched a virtual reality app, which allows our audience to experience the fun and excitement of a visit to our campus from anywhere in the world, using VR gear headsets.

We also recently launched for our fall 2017 admitted first-year students Inside Stony Brook, a private social network that is accessed through Facebook or a standalone mobile app. Incoming students are able to start connecting now with other admitted students in private communities themed around academic and extracurricular interests, participate in group chat,  receive important announcements right on their mobile devices, and start building a network of support.
