LIBRARY of CONGRESS CALL NUMBERS
bar
The University at Stony Brook Libraries use Library of Congress call numbers. Unlike the Dewey Decimal System, these call numbers begin with letters of the alphabet. The subject categories are:
A General Works
B Philosophy, Psychology, Religion
C Auxiliary Sciences of History
D World History
E, F American History
G Geography, Anthropology, Folklore, Sports
H Social Sciences, Sociology, Economics
J Political Science
K Law
L Education

M Music
N Fine Arts P Language & Literature
Q Science
R Medicine
S Agriculture
T Technology
U Military Science
V Naval Science
Z Bibliography & Library Science

There are no classifications beginning with the letters I, O, W, X, or Y. (A small x in front of a call number indicates an oversize book, which is shelved in a separate location.)

At a slightly more detailed level, a second letter--and sometimes even a third--may be added. The P classification, for example, breaks down roughly like this:

P Philology & Linguistics
PA Latin and Greek Languages & Literatures
PB Modern European Languages Generally, Celtic Languages & Literatures
PC Romance Languages
PD Old Germanic & Scandinavian Languages
PE English Language
PF Dutch & German Languages
PG Slavic, Baltic Languages & Literatures
PH Finno-Ugrian & Basque
PJ Afro-Asiatic
PK Indo-Iranian, Armenian, Caucasian
PL Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Oceanic, African
PM American Indian Languages, Artificial Languages
PN Literary Criticism, Poetry, Theater, Journalism
PQ Romance Literature
PR English Literature
PS American Literature
PT Germanic Literature
PZ Fiction, Juvenile Literature
