Catherine Lawrence |
Catherine Lawrence began her study of ballet in Paris France where she was born. At the age of 18 she traveled to New York where she was exposed for the first time to modern dance. She fell in love with the Graham technique and carried this back with her to Germany where she studied with Pina Bausch, Hans Zullig, Hans Brennae, Irene Bartos and Vera Volkova among others. She was a principal dancer with Pina Bausch and the Wuppertal Dance Theatre and The Netherlands Dance Theatre under the direction of Jiri Kylian. Catherine has worked with a plethora of influential choreographers of the 20th century including such luminaries as Pina Bausch, Jiri Kylian, Glen Tetley, Christopher Bruce, Nacho Duato, Kurt Joss, John Butler, Talley Beatty William Forsythe and Carlos Orta. She has taught ballet at the Royal Conservatory of Dance The Hague, The Netherlands as well as USDAN. Catherine has created several ballets that are preserved in the Plainview Old Bethpage High School Holocaust Memorial. Because of her unusual background and strengths in modern dance as well as classical ballet, Catherine has been able to teach her students a well rounded curriculum which includes all elements of her experiences.
