Health Pulse of America - September 2005
The Center for Survey Research conducted this poll of 830 adults in a national sample, between September 1 and September 25, 2005. The survey was conducted as part of the Health Pulse of America series, funded by Stony Brook University, its Health Science Center and the University Hospital. The survey focused on issues surrounding childhood obesity and nutrition, as well as steroid use among high school athletes and public disclosure of abortion positions of Supreme Court nominees.

Health Pulse of America - March 2005
The poll was conducted between February 3 and February 27 by the Stony
Brook University Center for Survey Research. 850 adults were
interviewed from the New York City Metro Area: 215 from Long Island,
209 from New York City, 212 from New Jersey suburbs, and 214 from
northern suburbs. The survey focused on opinions regarding the proposed
changes to Social Security, concerns about retirement and health care
costs.The poll was based on an RDD sample of telephone numbers drawn
from blocks with at least one-listed residential number.

Health Pulse of America - October 2004
In this national survey, respondents were interviewed both between
Sept. 13 and 29, 2004 and then again after the Presidential Candidate
Debates, from Oct. 14-17. Respondents were asked about their views on
several of the campaign health care issues and the 2004 Presidential
election. The initial interviews were based on a RDD nationally
representative sample. The survey was conducted as part of the Health

Preventive Medicine – Health Care Decisions
Long
Island residents between the ages of 50 and 75 were interviewed in the
Spring of 2002, and re-interviewed in the Spring of 2004 regarding
their health care decision in screening for colon and other cancers.
The study was conducted for the Department of Preventive Medicine,
Stony Brook University Medical School, and funded by the National
Cancer Institute.

Childhood Nutrition Survey
Parents
of children attending the Bay Shore, Long Island public schools were
surveyed regarding attitudes surrounding childhood nutrition, and the
responsibilities of parents and schools to provide healthy eating
choices and habits for their children. The study was conducted in the
Spring of 2003 for Josephine Connolly-Schoonen of the Department of
Family Medicine, Stony Brook University Hospital, and funded by the New
York State Department of Health.

Informal, Unpaid Care Giving to New York State Elders: Telephone Surveys
In this study telephone interviews were conducted with individuals who
provided unpaid care for a friend or relative, aged 60 or older, in a
random sample of households within New York State. Interviews were
conducted between June 23, 2001 and September 24, 2001. The study was
conducted for the Stony Brook University School of Social Welfare and
funded by a grant from the New York State Department for the Aging.
In
the Spring of 2003, the study was replicated with a random sample of
300 Suffolk County households. This study was conducted for the Stony
Brook University School of Social Welfare and funded by a grant from
the Suffolk County Office for the Aging.

Survey of Patients of the Suffolk County Health Centers
A
panel survey of Long Island residents between the ages of 52 and 75
years of age who have visited Suffolk County Health Centers. Initial
interviews were conducted in the Fall of 2004. The study deals with the
decisions people make about their health care, including screening for
colon and other cancers, and about their health care experiences at a
Suffolk County Health Center. The survey is being conducted by the
Department of Preventive Medicine at Stony Brook on behalf of the
Suffolk County Department of Health Services.

Tobacco-Related Behavior and Attitudes in Suffolk County, New York
This
poll dealt mainly with behavior and opinions on a range of issues
related to tobacco, including consumption, advertising, and health
concerns. Telephone interviews were conducted among a random sample of
adults (age 18 and older) from April 2, 2001 till June 27, 2001, with
1,985 Suffolk County residents. All interviews were conducted by the
Center for Survey Research at the State University of New York at Stony
Brook. Respondents were screened for their smoking status – smoker,
non-smoker, or a non-smoker with a smoking spouse/partner. The study
was conducted for the Suffolk County Department of Health.
