ABOUT THE GEOSCIENCES COLLECTION
bar
The Geosciences Collection is located in the Melville Library. It shares the North Reading Room in that building with the Engineering Collection, the Map Collection, the Biology Collection, and the general science collection. The primary purpose of the Geosciences Collection is to serve the research and teaching needs of the Geosciences Department.

The Geosciences collection includes in-depth coverage of geology, geophysics, geochemistry, hydrology, and planetary sciences, with lesser coverage of physical and chemical oceanography, paleontology, geomorphology, and mining sciences. The collection numbers over 40,000 books and 20,000 bound volumes of journals. The library currently subscribes to about 250 journals in the geosciences. The librarian in charge is Godlind Johnson.

The Geosciences Collection is complemented by collections in the other science libraries and in the Melville Library. Many materials relating to climate, oceanography, hydrology, and environmental sciences are in the Marine and Atmospheric Sciences Information Center (MASIC); the most heavily used Astronomy titles are now in the Math/Physics Library. The Melville Library houses a large map collection, which now includes the geological maps. Also in the Melville Library are numerous geological data files on CD-ROM, and many books on general science, environmental studies, and the history of science.
