The Engineering Library opened
on the second floor of the “Old Engineering” building in October
1964. This first of Stony Brook's Science Branch Libraries was directed
by librarian Ken First for more than 20 years. In 1986 the library was expanded
to accommodate it’s growing collections. Yet more space was needed
and all the materials related to Computer Science were moved out in 1987
into what was first called “Engineering Annex” and has become
the Computer Science Branch Library within the Computer Science Department.
Another effort to solve the space problem was made by creating a storage
area for periodical backfiles in the basement of Old Engineering.
In 1996 the Engineering Library was the first branch library to offer internet access to students on 5 workstations that were given to the library by the Engineering Dean’s Office. In January 1998 the collection, now numbering over 70,000 volumes, was
moved into the completely renovated North Reading Room of the Melville
Library Building. In the course of the next year first the Geoscience
and then the Biology collections were integrated with the Engineering
collection and the facility is now named “Science and Engineering
Library”. General science materials are also located here. The total
collection is now over 240,000 volumes, with additional journal backfiles
and rarely used books in a storage room on the 4th floor. |
