In 1976, the mathematics and physics collections were merged and moved to the library's present location, C level of the Graduate Physics Building which connects the fourth floor of the Mathematics Building with the bridge between the two towers. In the summer of 1998, a major part of the collection of Astronomy joined the Mathematics/Physics Library.

The library collection is presently made up of all current journal subscriptions and books, which have been published or circulated in recent years. The purpose of the collection and services is to support the teaching and research of the departments of Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, and Physics/Astronomy through and beyond the doctoral level.

A good amount of rarely used and old material has been moved to the "Storage Room" located in the Main Library Building. This material can be paged and retrieved easily. Some less frequently used and not so old material has been moved to the Science and Engineering Library, located in the North Reading of the Melville Library.

Some earlier volumes of current journals and copies of Stony Brook University dissertations are housed in a storage room, "Math/Physics Storage", which is adjacent to the Library. Materials in Math/Physics Storage are available only during office hours on weekdays.

When the Physics Building is closed, after 10 PM weekdays, and on weekends, the Main entrance facing south will be open for access to the Math/Physics/Astronomy Library.

Physical Reviews, one portion of INSPEC, is available on CD in the library.

In March 2003 the Library was named Peter B. Kahn Library of Mathematics, Physics, and Astronomy to commemorate Peter's many contributions to the library, his belief in the power of books to transform lives and his generosity to those who have studied here.
