The Government Documents' Law Collections are located on the second floor Core of the Frank Melville, Jr., Memorial Library. For assistance with the collections, please ask at the Reference Desk in the Central Reading Room. Access to the collections is available only from either the Central Reading Room or from the second floor of the Science & Engineering Library.

Although Stony Brook has no law school or formal law library, it maintains a collection of printed materials adequate for conducting limited legal research. The collections includes:
  • United States statutes, codes and annotated codes
  • New York State statutes and annotated laws
  • All current federal and New York State rules and regulations
  • Digests of Supreme Court, federal, and New York State court cases
  • American Law Reports provides information on court cases of other states
The Law Collection also houses legal reference materials, such as special dictionaries and encyclopedias.

Many legal reference sources are also available on the Internet. Some of the following are restricted to the Stony Brook campus community. Consult:
  • Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe
  • Legal Resources
  • Databases contain subject based index to resources in Law
The Government Documents Section and Law Collection are open to the public. The collections are regularly used by Stony Brook students, staff, and faculty, and also by students from other schools, lawyers, paralegals, and other members of the community.
